The Season Rides On This Week
September 9th, 2009 | by Brandon Peterson |Whether it’s been the Royals early, or the Tigers now, the Twins have been looking up at the AL Central leader, never being able to take sole possession of the lead. They currently sit 6.5 games back of the Tigers with a pivotal series coming up against them in about a week. As of today, the Twins have 24 games left to catch Detroit…it’s a task that seems highly improbable at this point considering the starting pitchers the Twins are putting on the mound every day. However, it’s not impossible…
If the Twins finish up in Toronto the way that they should and take 3 out of 4, and the Royals can win just one of the next two games against those Motor City Kitties, then the Twins will sit 5.5 games behind them when the Twinkies come home for a nice 9 game homestand. They get to play two teams that are under .500, the Athletics and the Indians, before capping the homestand off with a series against the Tigers.
However, the Kitties get to come home for a 7 game homestand against two teams under .500, Blue Jays and the Royals, before starting that series against the Twins. I just hope one of those teams can pull of a series win and keep the Twins in the race.
It must be tough knowing that you don’t control your own destiny, that you could win every game from here on out and unless other teams win, you are still out of the playoffs. Obviously that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. The Twins need help from some bad teams, and that’s tough to come by. All you can do as a fan is sit, watch, and enjoy what’s left of the season. You can have hope and cheer when the Twinkies get a win, but when it comes down to it…you still need help from other teams. And that really, truly…stinks.
Cheer on Carl Pavano tonight as he takes on Roy Halladay. Halladay has struggled since the All-Star break, so maybe the Twins can pull a victory out tonight. Halladay is 4-5 since the break, and 1-3 in his last 4 games. Although, his one win was his most recent complete-game shutout against the Yankees. Ooofta…hope and pray!
