Ladies and Gentlement…Carl Pavano…We Got Him

August 8th, 2009 | by Brandon Peterson |

The Twins are finally starting to assess needs and make moves to fill those holes. The starting pitching has been a huge flaw for the past month or so. In my opinion, only Scott Baker has been showing signs of improvement. Rookie Anthony Swarzak has been steady and Nick Blackburn has come back to his career stats. Glen Perkins and Francisco Liriano have both been trainwrecks, making it tough to watch any game in which either are pitching.

Carl Pavano

So the Twins realized this and acquired 33 year-old Carl Pavano from the Indians. The Twins will send a yet-to-be-named player to the Indians later on. Pavano is 10-8 on the season with a 5.09 ERA after a stellar debut with the Twins tonight. He went 7 innings giving up zero runs against the division leading Detroit Tigers. That’s what this Twins pitching staff needs, a starter that can eat up some innings without giving up the game. He’s not a staff ace, but he’s a solid pitcher who can bring a veteran presence to the rotation.

Another thing this deal does is show the stars on this team that Twins are willing to make moves to try and win. That’s been a big complaint from Morneau, Mauer, and Nathan. They want to play in Minnesota, but only if Minnesota wants to try and do more than just win a division. They want to see moves being made to assess needs and fill holes. The Twins organization is going to pull in $40 million more in profit next year due to the new stadium. It’d be nice to see the team spend some of that money to retain their stars and build a team that can compete for a championship. This season’s acquisitions Orlando Cabrera and now Pavano are a definite step in the right direction.
